  RECENT EVENT REPORTS

Icklesham Casuals 3rd Golf Open – 22nd July 2010

at Littlestone Warren Golf Club

It was a slightly smaller field that assembled at Liittlestone for the third ICFC open. Work and  holidays took away the Tiltmans, Mark Stace, Tim Linch, Dan Marsh and Steve Beale.

Jack Brown who hadn’t swung a club in 20 odd years came into the field though he took a long time to get to Littlestone deciding to go via Dymchurch, Hythe and most of southern Kent.

An innovation this year – thanks to Wayne Bumstead – was the Golden Ball competition which ensured there was a team feel for each group that went out. The basic rules are that different members of the group have to play with the team’s yellow ball on each hole. The score in points for that individual on that hole count and the total points over 18 holes is the team score. When and if the yellow ball gets lost that ends the scoring for that team (see later!)

Wayne opened proceedings by hooking his drive onto the driving range. He was accompanied by Richard Forrest and Ollie Beaumont (though both kept their drives on the fairway)

George Potter, Jack Brown, David Mayne and Bob Baker then went off next with varying degrees of success.

Mick Beaumont, Chris Baker and Keith Swallow brought up the rear.

The course was hard and fast and if you stayed out of the rough then you were ok. A big “if” for some……

The opening group of three finished about an hour before the sluggish group of four. Wayne and Richard were “well oiled” by the time others came in – though fortunately Ollie Beaumont stayed off the sauce.

The Golden Ball results were telling – Wayne, Richard and Ollie scored 31 points and the group of four scored a disappointing five having lost their ball on the fourth hole – a short par 3!. The winners of the team competition were Mick, Chris and Keith who kept their ball on the fairway (generally!) and ended up with 37 points.

And so to the exciting individual results……

George Potter won with 41 points and also the longest drive prize

Last year’s Wooden Spoon winner Richard Forrest was second with 40 points and won the nearest the pin prize on the 16th

Keith Swallow was third on 39 points and won both the shortest drive and the prize for best points score on holes 10-13

Bob Baker and Ollie Beaumont were fourth equal on 37 points

Mick Beaumont was sixth with 33 points and won the nearest the pin prize on the 4th

Chris Baker was seventh with 32 points

David Mayne and Wayne Bumstead were eighth equal with 30 points

Jack Brown won the Wooden Spoon with 11 points and the opportunity was also taken to award him a silver salver from the club for his services to football as an Icklesham stalwart (over 600 games) and as a referee for many years.

Thanks to all who attended and particularly to David Mayne for his work in arranging the prizes.

Christmas golf on December 28th at Horam Park and next July we’re looking at Hempstead Forest (Cranbrook) or Poultwood (Tonbridge) for the fourth Icklesham Casuals Open.

Icklesham Casuals F.C. v Icklesham Cricket Club

Sunday 30th May 2010

The sun shone down on the annual cricket match against Icklesham Cricket Club on Sunday 30th May and both players and supporters alike had a really enjoyable afternoon.

The football club, having suffered heavy defeats in the previous two games, were strengthened by the inclusion of Tim Hambridge and Alfie Weller as well as Nigel Sellman's cricketing colleague from Udimore, Dale who became an 'Honorary Casual' for the afternoon.

The cricket club went into bat first but were soon in trouble at 7-3 with Dale taking all three wickets, one to a great catch in the deep by Nick Soan. Kevin Earl then led the recovery before falling to a catch taken by wicketkeeper Bill Beaumont at the third attempt off the bowling of Tim Hambridge. With further contributions from Dean Earl and Sean Baker the cricket club ended on a total of 153 all out. Sean was last man out, caught behind off Alfie Weller, having allowed father Stuart to face just one ball at the other end!

Dale finished with five wickets and Tim Hambridge, George Potter, Jason Soan, Nigel Sellman and Alfie Weller took one wicket each. This puts George one ahead of Bob Baker in the ICFC wicket-taking records. Bill Beaumont took three good catches behind the stumps.

The Casuals went into bat shortly before tea and by teatime were already three wickets down, having lost David Mayne, Steve Tytherleigh and George Potter - all falling in one over from Aaron Leech.

Tea, kindly supplied by the cricket club and organised by Mags Baker, was lovely and proved to be the boost needed by the Casuals as they continued their innings. After losing two more early wickets after tea, Alfie Weller joined Tim Hambridge in a seventy-odd run partnership to take the score up to the 100 mark. Tim fell for 31 but supported by Bill Beaumont, Alfie continued the run chase.

When Alfie fell, Jason Soan helped Bill to add further runs, but when Jason was eighth batsman out, over 30 runs were still required to win. Dale came to the wicket and with Bill they gradually reduced the target, well assisted by a few timely and well-placed edges. Dale won the game in syle with a six over long on.

The winning side was Nigel Sellman (captain), Bob Baker, Bill Beaumont, Dale, Tim Hambridge, Alfie Weller, George Potter, Steve Tytherleigh, Nick Soan, Jason Soan and David Mayne.

A big thank you to the cricket club for such an enjoyable afternoon and to Nigel for skippering the side so well.
