ICKLESHAM CASUALS CHRISTMAS GOLF EVENT
The weather forecast wasn’t good but 12 foolhardy ICFC members turned up at Horam Park Golf Club on 29th December 2009 for the Christmas Golf Event.
The format was a 9 hole Texas Scramble – a team event which involves 3-person teams playing three balls, but with each shot coming from the same spot (the best of the three drives is chosen and all three team members then hit from that spot, and so on).
The winning team was captained (in the loosest definition of the word) by Mick Beaumont and his team members were Gavin Moor and <personnamew:ston>Bob Baker. They went round in a par score of 35 for the 9 holes and - when the team handicaps had been deducted - won by 2 shots.
Tony Forster’s team (with Ollie Beaumont and Keith Swallow) were second. A considerable achievement considering Tony was hardly the positive role-model having moaned about the rain and the cold and the state of the greens and…….
Steve Beales’s team (with Richard Forrest and young buck Lewis Tiltman) were third (fantastic team bonding, Steve!) and Dave Tiltman’s team (Wayne Bumstead and David Mayne) were fourth. The fact that they went out last and therefore played half their round in the heavy rain and could scarcely grip a club on the last two holes may have had something to do with it…..
Wayne Bumstead and Gavin Moor won prizes for nearest the pin on the 5th and 7th.respectively
Despite the weather an enjoyable and worthwhile event – at least I thought so!

Jon Fuller Memorial Match
The annual match between Icklesham Casuals and Viking in memory of Jon Fuller took place on Sunday 13th September 2009. It was good to see many old friends again with this year's game marking the first appearances of both Hugh Sullivan and Keith Swallow. An enjoyable and competitive encounter saw an Icklesham victory for the third year in a row (do we now get to keep the trophy?) by 5 goals to 4 with a hat-trick from Bob Baker and two goals from Felix Sullivan. Bill Beaumont, appearing for Viking, was named man of the match.
Thanks go to Stuart Adams and Martin Tytherleigh for their hard work in organising the game and to all those who helped. The sum of £231.50 was raised for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Pictures of the day have been added to the website in "Photo Gallery 2 Misc 2009 - date" but if anyone has any photographs we would appreciate copies being sent to the club e-mail address so we can add them to the club records. Thank you.

ICKLESHAM GOLF DAY 23rd JULY 2009
Wellshurst Golf and Country Club near Horam was the venue for the second Icklesham Golf Day.
After the normal whingeing about handicaps (completely ignored of course by the organiser) Dan Marsh the 2008 champion struck the first shot into the rough. Tim Linch took a massive divot with a swing faster than a Formula 1 car and then Dave Tiltman also put his shot into the rough. It was left to Ollie Beaumont to show the way for the first group with a drive down the middle. Three other groups followed with Wayne Bumstead, George Potter and Mark Stace making their debuts.
Lewis Tiltman – playing off a handicap of 8 – started badly and scored poorly on some of the early holes. His class quickly began to show however and his drive on the par 4 seventh – leading to a birdie 3 will long live in the memory. He will want to forget his drive on the 9th however which hit a tree and bounced back within five yards of the tee. He won the shortest drive prize!
Mark Stace was a steady scorer – despite having his nicotine supply cut off by a lost lighter on the 7th – and could have been the champion if he had scored points on the 18th
Steve Beale was also wonderfully consistent and only a couple of holes on the back nine where he failed to score prevented him getting into the top 3. On those couple of holes we were treated to more swear words than was healthy for a teacher and upstanding member of the community.
Chris Baker – last year’s wooden spoon winner – improved dramatically this year failing to score on only 3 holes and ending up with 31 points.
Keith Swallow - who had been quiely lobbying for an improvement in his handicap – did very nicely playing off the same as 2008 to finish 6th
David Mayne started so badly that nobody would have been surprised if he had walked off the course after 5 holes (2 points up to then!) but recovered to a very respectable 31points.
Mick Beaumont was also consistent and depending on what card was used had 37 or 38 points. After this had been sorted out he finished second pushing his son Olllie back to third place. Competitive Dad strikes again.
And so to the results:
Tim Linch was the champion with 38 stableford points and he also won the nearest the pin prize for the 18th hole.
Mick Beaumont was second with 38 points (count back involving the last 9 holes was used to separate the top three places)
Ollie Beaumont was third with 38 points
Mark Stace 36 points and he won the nearest the pin on the 9th
Steve Beale 35 points
Keith Swallow 34 points
David Mayne 31 points
Chris Baker 31 points
Dave Tiltman 31 points
Lewis Tiltman 31 points won a prize for holes 10-13 and the “hacker” prize for nearest the tee
George Potter 31 points
Wayne Bumstead 31 points
Bob Baker 29 points won the nearest the pin on the 3rd
Dan Marsh 28 points
Richard Forrest 27 points took the Wooden Spoon and nearest the pin on the 14th
A welcome meal closed a very successful day. Keep your diary clear for 22nd July 2010
VETERANS COMPETITION (October 2008) The Hastings & District FA Veterans competition kicks off on Wednesday 27 August. We begin our defence of the Cup with a home tie against Tackleway. There are two groups of four teams, with the top two in each group going forward to the semi finals. The other teams in our group are Little Common (who we visit on 3 September) and Sidley United (10 September, away). Cheers Keith. Results v Tackleway - won 5 - 0 v Little Common - 0 - 0 v Sidley - Points awarded to Icklesham Semi Final v Wadhurst - won 4 - 0 Final v Little Common - lost 6 - 2
VETERANS CUP FINAL The Veterans have reached the final of the Hastings F.A. Veterans Cup after a 4-0 win over Wadhurst United at Washwell Lane in the semi-final on Wednesday evening.
The victory over a good Wadhurst side was a lot harder than the scoreline suggests. We rode our luck in the first half with Wadhurst, kicking down the slope, creating several opportunites and went in at the interval with a 1-0 lead thanks to a Tony Forster penalty after a foul on Vernon Deller. In what was a terrific team performance, George McEwan added two more in the second half with Michael Beaumont getting the fourth in the closing minutes. |
John Fuller Memorial game (September 2008)

JOHN FULLER MEMORIAL MATCH
An entertaining game last Sunday saw a 7-6 victory for Icklesham Casuals over Viking. Well done and thank you to all those who played or came along to support and helped raise the excellent sum of £243 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Thank you also to everyone, especially Stuart, who helped to organise the event.
A note for your diaries – the game next year will be on Sunday 13th September 2009.
We would also like to send our best wishes to Steve Fuller for his recovery from his broken leg.

ICKLESHAM GOLF DAY 30th JULY 2008
It was a beautiful July day and 14 players, ex-players, sons of players, sons of ex-players (you get the idea) turned up at Weald of Kent Golf Course near Headcorn – each hoping to have a chance to take the trophy for the first Icklesham Casuals Open Golf Tournament. Jo Beardsley and Mick “the Dog” Zysmil looked surprisingly confident considering they hadn’t swung a club for 5 and 15 years respectively. Chris Baker was a bag of nerves after hacking his way around other courses in the previous two weeks but managed to get it over the water at the difficult first hole. Tim Lynch and Dan Marsh – by far the most competitive individuals in the field – started well and unfortunately for the rest of us kept that standard up for the whole round. Steve Beale and Richard Forrest decided to have a buggy - a very wise choice given their advanced years. Oliver Beaumont didn’t even reach the water at the first (and so briefly held the shortest drive title) but received short shrift from his dad Mick who thought sympathy and advice weren’t the answer and announced that “it would be good for him”.

It was a long 18 holes and many people saw a lot of the course. Bob Baker waxed lyrical about Dave Tiltman’s putting stroke until it frankly verged on hero-worship. Bob was also weighed down with organisational duties and failed to capitalise on his immense potential to finish a disappointing 10th. Lewis Tiltman – despite moaning about his handicap before the start – was consistent throughout and ended with 35 points. Mick Beaumont – the natural sportsman – was also consistent and scored 29 points. David Mayne and Keith Swallow – dark horses before the tournament - remained dark horses during the tournament but finished creditably with 25 points in 7th equal place. The Beale/Forrest buggy helped Richard rather than Steve. Richard finishing on 26 points and 6th place while the pre-tournament favourite Steve limped in 11th with 22 points. And so to the prize winners: Chris Baker took the Wooden Spoon and shortest drive titles Oliver Beaumont won the nearest the pin on the 13th Tim Lynch was third with 33 points and won the prize for best last six holes Lewis Tiltman was second with 35 points Dan Marsh was the winner with 39 stableford points and he also won the nearest the pin prize for the 6th hole. An extra award that wasn’t announced on the day…. Jo Beardsley was so rarely on the fairway that Weald of Kent have named the trees down the side of the 9th hole “Beardsleys’ wood” in his honour. A welcome curry closed a very successful day. Next year already being planned! |
